CHILDREN EDUCATION

Education System in Hong Kong

  • The education system in Hong Kong was established similar to that of the United Kingdom. Students attend three optional years of kindergarten, six years of primary school, three years of junior secondary school and three years of senior secondary school. Upon completion of the senior secondary education, students will take the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE). Successful candidates will be admitted to tertiary institutions for local Bachelor's Degree education on a 4-year curriculum.
  • For a better understanding of the Hong Kong education system, you may read detailed information on the website of the Education Bureau and An Overview of Various School Types in Hong Kong prepared by the Human Resources Office.
  • The Education Bureau provides information about education services for non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students, from early integration by knowing more about education in Hong Kong, school profiles (from kindergartens, primary schools to secondary schools), to education support measures for NCS students.  You may go to the relevant webpages for detailed information based on your children’s education needs/level.
  • There is also a website about International Schools in Hong Kong where you can find basic information about different international schools (primary and secondary levels) and access to their respective websites.
  • If you prefer schools nearby HKUST campus, look up for schools in “Sai Kung” District in “New Territories” as you browse through school lists/profiles in the above websites.

University Support and Services

  • As competition for places (especially for young children) in ESF and international schools is keen, the Human Resources Office (HRO) is providing administrative support (e.g. sharing school information, assistance in applications for school places etc.) to non-local new faculty members in search of school places for their kids. If you wish to obtain more information on international school education or require assistance in children's schooling, please contact Ms Irene KONG of HRO at hrirenek@ust.hk or (852) 3469 2417.
